When you receive a shadow drop, you have a chance to instead get the message "The Gods created a new slot in your item!" This will add a Zir gem to your currently equipped accessory. This can happen 9 times for that slot, going from Zir1 to Zir9.
At any time, you can visit 0,2 in Temple of Shadows to replace the Zir with a gem of choice, matching the Zir grade in exchange for Marbles. For example, if you have a Zir3 in your accessory, you can exchange it to become a Grade 3 Dragon Fang or any other Grade 3 Gem.
Once you slot a gem, you're stuck with that gem! So make sure it is what you want to put inside the accessory.

The higher your level, the greater the chance of receiving a Zir upgrade when dropping shadows.
